Prof. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, hailed the announcement as “a pivotal starting point” that publicly affirms the University’s determination to help address the global climate crisis. He emphasized the ambitious 2030 target and a structured approach that combines emissions reduction with carbon removal/offset measures.
The commitment advances Walailak University’s action plan in line with national policy directions—Thailand’s National Net Zero Roadmap 2050, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) environmental policy, and UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action)—with the University aiming to catalyze a low-carbon society and serve as a model green campus.
Highlighting work already under way, Prof. Sombat noted years of continuous initiatives in energy and environmental stewardship, including energy-efficiency upgrades, renewable energy adoption, systematic waste management, care for over 1,500 rai of green space, and research and innovation that support greenhouse-gas management and climate solutions.
Assoc. Prof. Warit Jotchitt, Vice President for Administration and Sustainable Development, said the event aimed to build shared awareness and common understanding among leadership, faculty, staff, and students regarding the University’s social responsibility, while strengthening partnerships with public- and private-sector organizations to exchange knowledge and accelerate low-carbon development.
The program featured both symbolic and academic components: the unveiling of the University’s “Carbon Sink”, a tree-watering ceremony symbolizing natural-resource conservation, an expert panel discussion, and a sustainability exhibition at the Museum and Sky Observatory—demonstrating Walailak University’s capacity and readiness to act on carbon management.
Walailak University concluded by reaffirming its resolve to implement measurable GHG-reduction actions, expand collaborative research and innovation, and strengthen monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to deliver on its Carbon Neutrality 2030 goal—contributing tangible impact to Thailand’s transition toward a low-carbon, sustainable future.
