On 18 December 2025, Walailak University held the Soft Opening Ceremony of the Sirindhorn Natural History Museum at the Sirindhorn Natural History Museum Building, Walailak University Botanic Park, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The event marked the official introduction of the new museum as a model learning center for natural resource and environmental conservation in Southern Thailand, representing a significant milestone in the development of regional museum-based learning standards.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Mr. Somchai Leelanoi, Governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, delivered the welcome address, while Associate Professor Dr. Suwit Wuthisuthimethi, Vice President for Strategic Planning and Good Governance, presented the objectives of the event. The ceremony was attended by university executives, distinguished guests, and members of the media at Busarakham Conference Room within the museum building.
The Sirindhorn Natural History Museum was established in response to the royal initiative of the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiative of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (RSPG). Its core mission is to serve as a learning hub that fosters awareness, appreciation, and stewardship of natural resources and the environment. The museum presents exhibitions under the theme “Following in the Footsteps of the Conservation-Minded Princess: From the Mountains to the Deep Sea,” showcasing diverse perspectives on Thailand’s natural resource conservation efforts.
The museum features eight modern exhibition galleries, covering topics in natural history, biodiversity, ecosystems, and local wisdom. Supporting facilities include a conference room for academic activities and seminars, a museum shop offering merchandise and souvenirs, and a family-friendly activity plaza. These facilities are designed to accommodate students, educators, tourists, and the general public.
In its development, the museum integrates a quality management system into its learning space administration to meet international museum standards. This approach ensures effective service delivery across academic content, learning experiences, and the overall visitor environment, enhancing both educational value and visitor satisfaction.
Beyond its role as a natural history learning center, the Sirindhorn Natural History Museum is a key driver of the vision of Walailak University Botanic Park to become a regional model for learning, research, and recreation in natural history and indigenous wisdom for sustainability. The museum strengthens the potential of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province and Southern Thailand as destinations for eco-tourism and lifelong learning.
The Soft Opening serves as an initial phase to test service systems, gather feedback, and build public awareness ahead of full-scale operations. It is expected to attract visitors and enthusiasts from across the country, contributing to educational advancement, local economic development, and the long-term positive image of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.
